Patsy Shaw memorial May 2008
Whaea Patsy Shaw taught at
Taipa Area Schol for 30 years
A group of students, staff members,
whanau and people from the local community worked together to
construct of a memorial on the reserve at the beach front of the
school. This was a
favourite place for Whaea Patsy Shaw and Pia Ihaka to sit at
lunchtimes to deliberate the events of the day
A group at Taipa Area
School designed an amazing seat and garden, facing Doubtless
Bay. Based on a koru design, the central statue of a woman’s
figure wrapped in a cloak unfolds to embrace those who come to
sit. Mosaic tiles tell the story of Whaea Patsy’s life and work
in our kura and community.
Thanks to all who took part and supported
the project. Already it has attracted many positive comments.
The opening ceremony took place on June 5 at 6:30am.
